Description: "What We Can Learn from Norway, New York and Afar" is the second presentation in the 2012- 2013 series, Sustainable Development: International Perspectives on Policy and Practice, exploring multidisciplinary approaches to planning and design. The presentations will focus on the new and challenging design perspectives, processes, and models of practice. In this deep exploration of questions now facing practicing architects, we will also talk about what has been done, is it viable, is it replicable, does it work or not, what more can we do, how, why, what's missing?

Architect, teacher, and writer, Ingerid Helsing Almaas is the editor of Arkitektur N (Norway). Ingerid will present Norway's sustainability policy and practice initiatives, the driving considerations of its natural resources and environmental concerns and historic architectural and cultural perspectives. Case studies and discussion to follow.

Susannah C. Drake, AIA, architect, landscape architect, and professor, is principal of dlandstudio, a Brooklyn firm that uses a systems based landscape architecture approach, valuing strong, intuitive expression that is both culturally relevant, ecologically productive, and logically constructed--a research based process that values the variable periods of geologic, ecological, and cultural systems. Susannah is the recipient of the 2013 AIA Young Architects Award.
