Green Flooring

Description: A Lunch and Learning Program, with Bill Jordan, New England Regional Council of Carpenters

Learn how flooring fits into the green construction industry, what the flooring options for LEED points are, and how the competency of a flooring installer can affect how a specification for green flooring is implemented. Life cycle issues will also be covered.

Lunch will be served. There is a $15 fee for walk-ins. Those who sign up and do not cancel if they cannot attend will be charged $10. AIA Connecticut does not endorse any product lines.

Tour of Stony Creek Quarry

Description: Join your fellow AIA Connecticut members in a tour of the Stony Creek Granite Quarry, in operation since 1858. You will learn about the properties of the quarry’s pink granite, as well as its various applications as panels, stairs, pavers, veneer, quarry cut block, and crushed stone.

Led by Darrell Petit, the tour of will be followed by an all American barbeque, hosted by the Quarry Corporation. Don’t miss this delightful summer excursion that combines learning and a delicious lunch!

Please wear casual, appropriate attire and walking shoes. Please bring sun screen, as we will be walking through the quarry for an hour and a half.

The New Connecticut Fire Prevention Code

Description: Joe Kingston, Fire and Life Safety Supervisor, Department of Public Safety, Office of the State Fire Marshal, will present a program on the new Connecticut State Fire Prevention Code, in force July 1, 2010. Joe has many years of experience in presenting programs on fire safety issues to building and fire officials and design professionals.

Primarily for existing buildings, the new Fire Prevention Code is designed to assist local fire marshals in their day-to-day inspections. The code covers many of the referenced standards as found in the Connecticut Fire Safety Code. Design professionals should attend this program to insure compliance.

Copies of the new code may be downloaded from the Office of the State Fire Marshal website,
http://www.ct.gov/dps/cwp/view.asp?a=2149&q=294300 or may be purchased from AIA Connecticut for $10.00 (members) or $12.00 (non members) plus Connecticut sales tax.

An HVAC Primer

Description: "Understanding MEP Systems and System Requirements for Commercial and Residential Construction"

John E. Kohler, P.E., Rory S. Ronan, P.E., and Joseph V. Lembo, P.E. of Kohler Ronan, LLC Consulting Engineers, Danbury and New York City, will present a seminar addressing the most common questions that the Architect may have in executing a project with an MEP Engineer or Design Build Contractor. Kohler Ronan is a multi-disciplined firm providing Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection engineering design services.

The three-part seminar will include:
· A detailed review of common MEP systems, including system components and sustainable options such as geo-thermal heating and cooling.
· Focus on the two common methods for project delivery, explaining in detail typically “what comes in the box” in terms of services and the role of the MEP engineer or design/build contractor; how to set up the project for success; understanding what questions to ask the G.C., the HVAC Contractor.
· Pitfalls in the construction process: what can and will go wrong; including a review of MEP issues that typically arise and how to recognize and address them for a successful project.
