Philip Santore is Senior Principal at Ducibella Venter & Santore (DVS) Security Consulting and Engineering, Hamden. DVS is one of the oldest independent security consulting and engineering companies in the country. It provides security assessment of existing and new facilities and develops protection and comprehensive security programs. Its clients include the new World Trade Center, Madison Square Garden, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the New York Water Supply.

Brian Humes, AIA, is a founding partner in the firm of Jacunski Humes Architects, LLC, Berlin. Mr. Humes has over 25 years of experience in the design and construction of municipal Public Safety facilities and has consulted with national and governmental organizations on security issues related to design. He has conducted seminars on both public safety facility design and security design. Brian also holds current membership in national, regional and local chiefs of police associations.

The 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) is scheduled for near future adoption and implementation. Architects with residential projects that will be underway in the second half of the year are advised to consult this code as they begin their design work. At this program, AIA Connecticut member Christopher Laux, AIA, will review some of the essential changes in the new code. Code consultant Christopher Laux, AIA is formerly the Connecticut State Building Inspector.

Topics to be covered will include changes from the 2003 IRC in the areas of energy efficiency, foundations, fire resistant construction, wind regions, lightweight steel framing, alternative wall framing systems and adoption of the 2011 National Electrical Code.

Under the direction of Duncan Hazard, AIA and Richard Olcott, FAIA of Ennead Architects, the renovation unites the 1953 Louis I. Kahn Building, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery (Swartwout Hall) and Street Hall (1866) in the $135 million project.

“…Four floors of railroad galleries connect the three buildings of disparate styles and move the viewer almost seamlessly through the history of art in a triumph of curatorial taste and architectural savvy. Linear Drain Systems have become an important element in the overall design of the bathroom, wet room, or outdoor application. While the concept of creating drainage for “Barrier Free Bathrooms” is sometimes a challenge, this course will express the options, benefits, and solutions that linear drain systems provide and also how they apply to ADA codes for accessibility. A review of different types of linear drains will be covered, along with a comparison of traditional and modern waterproofing techniques that are integral in understanding the installations of linear drain systems. You will learn about waterproofing technology within an indoor wet area/bathroom; floor pitch & ADA requirements within the indoor wet area/bathroom and how it applies to linear drain systems; and outdoor trench drain design and applications.

Description: "Blower Door Testing" with Steve Pelton, EcoSmart Building Services, East Berlin and Paul Griese, CDC, Curtain Wall Design and Consulting, Inc., Farmington.

Steve Pelton will discuss the blower door test, one of two options to demonstrate compliance with the residential air tightness requirement in the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC). The 2009 IECC is currently in effect in the State of Connecticut; the 2009 IRC is expected to go into effect in the early fall of 2013. However, it will be the only method to demonstrate compliance in the 2012 edition of both codes. Learn how the test is performed and when the test should be performed so that failure does not delay the certificate of occupancy and not unduly increase construction costs.

Paul Griese will talk about what air barrier information should be on commercial plans to fulfill code and contractual requirements; what testing can or should be specified; the reasons why whole building testing is not usually done on large commercial buildings; and present a case study of an ongoing renovation project where air barrier work is subject to claims (maybe, have to keep it confidential).

New generation air to air reversible heat pumps have a COP between 2 and 3 (equal to a geothermal installation) but without the high cost of geothermal. The new models are efficient even below freezing with a small back up heat source. They are a great low cost option for energy efficient air tight houses.
